Description
Two books on casting. They are fine for working copies, have some cover flaws.Practical casting by Tim McCreight. This informative and practical book covers a wide range of small scale casting techniques, from cuttlefish to contemporary lost wax casting. It has become the established textbook on the subject in universities and craft programs around the world.
Creative casting by Choate. This is the first book to cover in one volume all the major methods of casting metals that are applicable to many crafts and especially to jewelry making. They include techniques for lost wax, replica, hollow core, sand, cuttlefish bone, and rubber-mold methods of casting. With these, the artist-craftsman can cast his own original creations or he can duplicate ("mass produce") works he or a fellow craftsman, beginner or advanced, can reproduce in metal hundreds of items from nature such as flowers, insects, butterflies, leaves. The first part of this book is devoted to casting itself: creating the design to be cast; the tools and materials and how to use them; working with wax models and with objects to be reproduced; spruing; investing; burning-out; then the final casting. The second part of the book deals with finish: basic, then fine finished; soldering; surface treatment and decoration; gemstone mountings and findings; electroplating; enameling. There are complete tables essential to the casting methods, and an extensive bibliography and index. The more than 400 illustrations include how-to drawings and photographs as well as finished jewelry pieces by such artist-craftsmen as Edna Sayre, Jayne Smith, Helen Pegram, Robert Coleman, Henry Rianda, Anne Donnelly, Ruth Noble and Lou Binkley. There are examples of cast silverware by Stanley Lechtzin and Earle Krentzin, and cast sculpture by Henri Matisse, Ernest Mahlke, and Richard O'Hanlon. This is an indispensable book for every jewelry craftsman and student who do their own casting.
